Grey Water Management (GWM): Greywater, i.e., the wastewater generated from bathing, washing, kitchen is encouraged to be managed as much as possible near to the source, if the management is not possible at household level, it's being managed at community level. Greywater is recommended to be managed using 3 Rs (Reduce, Reuse and Recharge) principle through either household level interventions such as kitchen gardens, soak pits, leach pits etc and community level interventions like Community soak pits/leach pits and Greywater Management Systems like, Waste Stabilisation Ponds (WSPs), DEWATS, Phytorid etc. Background: Villages across India face grey water management challenges including: (a) land scarcity for treatment systems, (b) annual flooding that renders soak pits non-functional and (c) soak pit overflow due to siltation or discharge rates exceeding absorption capacity. Existing GWM solutions are not fully adapted to these conditions. Description: Develop innovative, low-cost greywater management models requiring minimum land and portable plug & play mechanized solutions for household and community level. Explore greywater management technologies flood prone villages. Also address the challenge of soak pit overflow when discharge rate exceeds absorption capacity. Expected Solution: A modular, minimum-footprint greywater treatment system (vertical biofilter, raised baffled reactor or modified constructed wetland) for household and community level use; a flood-resilient GWM design for flood-prone villages; and a low-cost soak pit overflow management solution (pre-filter, expanded capacity design, or secondary leach field) and bypass-enabled greywater drainage network to ensure continuous wastewater management during flooding or Upgradation of existing greywater drains with flood-resilient bypass provisions to ensure uninterrupted drainage during inundation. Potential Impact: Elimination of stagnant greywater; reduced mosquito breeding; groundwater protection; scalable solution for diverse agro-climatic zones. Enhanced resilience and sustainability of rural sanitation infrastructure through uninterrupted wastewater conveyance and treatment.
