Background & Description: Water losses due to leakages in distribution networks significantly impact the efficiency, reliability, and sustainability of water supply systems.Undetected leaks can lead to wastage of treated water, increased operational costs, reduced service levels, and potential contamination through ingress of pollutants. Current leak detection technologies are often expensive and may not be suitable for widespread deployment, particularly in rural and small-town water supply systems. There is a need for indigenous, affordable, and scalable sensor-based solutions capable of real-time detection and localization of leaks within water distribution networks. The proposed solution should: Detect and accurately locate leakages in pipelines. Provide real-time alerts and monitoring capabilities. Be energy-efficient and cost-effective. Integrate with existing water supply infrastructure. Support remote monitoring and maintenance planning
Expected Outcomes
1. Development of indigenous leak detection sensor systems suitable for water distribution networks. 2. Early identification and localization of pipeline leakages. 3. Reduction in non-revenue water and operational losses. 4. Improved efficiency of operation and maintenance activities. 5. Enhanced reliability, sustainability, and service delivery of water supply systems.
